This weeks Tuesdays with Dorie recipe came from Amy of South in your Mouth. Amy chose Dorie’s double crusted blueberry pie which made the husband VERY happy. He loves all fruit pies but especially blueberry.
I had a couple issues with this pie. The recipe tells you to mix the blueberries with a ton of flour and sugar and when I dumped the blueberries into the pie shell I ended up with flour and sugar on top. Now this is my fault but I assumed that it would kind of melt into the pie once the heat got to it. Not so. It made a weird crust on top that you can kind of see in the picture. I ended up pulling the pie out halfway through and scraping off what I could but a good bit of it was still there. I also found the end result kind of gritty. You could definitely feel the sugar/flour mixture on the blueberries.
But I’m not going to lie. I had a piece of pie for breakfast two days in a row. The whole pie was gone by the end of the third day. I think with a little tweaking this could be a really good pie.
PS. This was my very first lattice top pie. Yay!
For the full recipe go check out South in your Mouth and to see how the rest of the group did visit the blogroll.

I love how many of the recipes lately have been able to qualify as “breakfast food.” And your lattice looks perfect – great job!

For your first lattice topped pie, you did an excellent job! (And I would totally have pie for breakfast too with that around!)

I like your lattice! Sorry the pie didn’t turn out quite as you hoped. But at least you liked eating it! π

The lattice is perfect – I’ve NEVER been able to do that – which is why I never do!!
Hmmm, pie for breakfast, I’ll have to try that sometime!

Your lattice top is perfect. I’ve got to get a LOT more confident with basic crust before I’ll attempt something that complex.
And pie makes a *sensational* breakfast… with blueberries it’s full of antioxidant goodness!

I had the same problem with a blob of sugar and flour right in the center of my pie, on the top. I could see it peeking out of the hole I cut in the center. Somehow, in the last 15 minutes it disappeared and turned into the gooey filling I wanted to see. Sorry that was a long story, but I understand about the flour/sugar blob. It looks great with the lattice top!

I really like the lattice top. It’s very intimidating to me, though. Hope you enjoyed the breakfast pie!

Nice lattice top! I totally agree with you about the amount of flour and sugar that went into the pie. It was a little gritty and some smoothness was lost. The crust was great though!

EXCELLENT job on the lattice!

I like the lattice. I didn’t have your problem with frozen berries, but with fresh. The crust was great, was it?

Your lattice top looks awesome! I had a bunch left in the bottom of my filling bowl, too- I think I tried to stir too gently? Either way, delicious!

Your pie looks delicious, the lattice top is really beautiful. I think I might try cornstarch instead of flour next time, might get rid of the white “goo”! Still, a very good pie. π

It does look great – maybe less flour and/or sugar next time? I cut down on the sugar in the filling and it was still great.

Looks great in the picture even if it did not turn out like you would have liked. Great job on the lattice!

I love pie for breakfast. It can’t be any worse than a muffin, and certainly no worse than a donut! Yours looks wonderful.
